The Great War 1914-1918

Dorchester's main war memorial known, locally as the Cenotaph, was officially unveiled on 24th May 1921 in memory of those who gave their lives during the Great War of 1914-1918
and the names of 239 individuals from Dorchester are listed in the front four panels on the monument shown below.
It stands at the junction of South Street and South Walks

The lives of 295 soldiers from Dorchester who lost their lives during the First World War,
have been been extensively covered by Brian Bates in his book "Dorchester Remembers the Great War" (see cover depicted above)
which was published in June 2012. I have therefore confined myself to images of some of the memorials and with Brian's permission reproduced
a list of those covered in his book which can be purchased from Amazon or Waterstones and costs £12.99, with Brian's Royalties being donated to his charities Sense and Sightsavers.

Dorchester Remembers the Great War

During the Great War of 1914-18 over 1100 men enlisted from Dorchester. They served in such diverse theatres of war as France, India, Afghanistan and Russia. Most of them survived that terrible conflict and returned home to tell their own unique stories. Those who did not are commemorated on the Borough’s war memorials and in its two cemeteries.

Dorchester Remembers the Great War gives a voice to the 294 men and one woman who did not survive. Through their always poignant and sometimes surprising personal stories the impact of the war on each individual and their families is revealed. But more than this, these stories weave together to shine a light on the impact the war made on the very fabric of Edwardian Dorchester - Brian Bates
