At the Court, Dorchester, on Monday next [blank] the feast of St. [blank], 11 Henry IV., was exhibited the will of Joan, wife of Thomas Faryngdon, dated the day of St. Prisca, Virgin, 1410, containing, inter alia, " I bequeath to Willlam Peuerell and Robert Crawford, and their heirs, a burgage in Dorchester, situate in the parish of St. Peter, between tenements of Robert Crokker and Nicholas Webbe, weaver (tex toris) to hold of the chief lords of that fee."

Henry Crauell, of Dorchester, and Alice, his wife, grant to Nicholas Pury, of Dorchester, and Agnes, his wife, and the heirs of Nicholas, the third part of their toft in Dorchester, situate on the west side of South Street, between the tenements of Geoffrey Mose on the south, and of the Fraternity of Blessed Mary in the church of St. Peter in Dorchester in the comer, on the north, which third part is the corner part (angularis pars) of the toft, to hold of the King in capite. At the Court, Dorchester, Monday next before the feast of Purification of Blessed Mary, 13 Henry IV. [1411], was exhibited the will of Henry Wytyng, of Fordyngton, dated 20th March, 1409, containing, inter alia, " I bequeath to Henry Towker, of Fordyngton, and Edith, his wife, and the heirs of the aforesaid Henry, my tenement with curtilage in Dorchester, situate on the south side of Durnelane, between the tenement formerly of John Glouer, and the tenement formerly of Walter Wittok, to hold of the King in capite, to hold annually the obit of John, Alice and Richard Durant, and to pay yearly to the church of All Saints, Dorchester, a pound of wax, and to the Fraternity of St. John the Baptist there, id."

Will of William Walyssh.

To the Court, Dorchester, Monday next before the Purification of Blessed Mary, 12 Henry IV. [1411], was exhibited the will of William Walysch, of Dorchester, dated 20th September, 1410, containing, inter alia, " I bequeath to Joan, my wife, my tenement in Dorchester, situate on the north side of West Street, near the Gate (prope portam), between the places of Richard Hayne, of Dorchester, on the west, and of John Jurdan, jun., on the east, to hold for her life of the King in capite, and then to remain to Richard, my son, and his lawful issue and heirs, failing these to remain to Edith, my daughter, and her heirs, on condition that she gives 10 marks to Matilda, my daughter, for her marriage, when she arrive at marriageable age; if Edith die without lawful issue or assigns, then the tenement to be sold, and the proceeds expended on works of mercy, under the supervision of Geoffrey Mose and Joan, my wife."

At the Court, Dorchester, of the above date, was exhibited the will of Nicholas Webbe, of Dorchester, dated 3rd April, 1410, containing, inter alia, " I bequeath to Agnes, my wife, a tenement on the south side of Durnelane, Dorchester, between the tenements of John Pury on the east, and of Heruy (Henry?) Hesteveld on the west, for her use, and then to remain to Thomas, my son, and his heirs."

Walter Bouer and Sarah, his wife, grant by indenture to William Portland, and his heirs, their burgage with curtilage in Dorchester, situate between the burgage of William Assh on the west, and the lane which leads towards the Friars Minors on the east, and the High Street (alia strata) which leads to the East Gate on the south, and their burgage called la Northbern on the north, which they lately had by the feoffment of the executors of John Syward, to hold of the King in capite, rendering to the grantors 16s. a year, in quarterly payments. Edith, late wife of Henry Towkere, of Fordyngton, grants to Reginald Jacob, of Dorchester, and his heirs, her tenement there, situate on the south side of Durnelane, between tene ments of Cristina Kanndy on the west, and of William Ayssh on the east, which descended to her per jus accrescendi (she was joint tenent with her husband in respect of this tenement) after the death of Henry, her husband, and which was lately Henry Whytyng's, and which the grantor and her husband had by bequest of the said Henry Whytyng, to hold of the King in capite. Concord made in full Court held at Dorchester, Monday in the feast of St. Bartholomew, 12 Henry IV. [1411], con cerning a curtilage lying on the south side of the tenement of Robert Cokeman, which Nicholas Pury and Henry Crauel claim against the said Robert, and concerning one area near the said curtilage, which Robert claims against Henry and Nicholas, by which Henry and Nicholas acknowledge the said curtilage and its wall to be the right of Robert, and Robert acknowledges the said area on the east of the said curtilage to be the right of Nicholas. For greater security the parties came in full Court, Monday in the feast of the Decollation of St. John Baptist, 13 Henry IV. [1414], was exhibited the will of Matilda Westpray, of Dorchester, dated 2nd December, 1413, and containing, " I bequeath to William Clark and William Forde, my executors, two tenements in Dorchester, one on the east side of South Street, between the tenements of Walter Roger on the south, and of John Bomel on the north, the other on the south side of Pyselane, between the tenement of Richard Bertram on the west, and the burgage late of John Duddill on the east, to hold of the King in capite, on the condition that the execu tors, as soon as Joan, daughter of Agnes, my daughter, shall be married, shall re-feoff the said Joan in the premises to her and her heirs. At the Court, Dorchester, Monday next [i.e. 6th Nov 1413] after the feast of All Saints, I Henry V. [i.e.1st Nov 1413], was exhibited the will of Richard Hayne, of Dorchester, dated Tuesday, next [i.e. 4th July] after the feast of SS. Peter and Paul [i.e. 29th June], 1413, containing, inter alia, " I bequeath to Alice, my wife, my tenement on the west side of South Street, Dorchester, between the tenements of the Abbot of Abbotesbury on the south, and of Thomas Faryngdon on the north, rendering yearly for the maintenance, of the bell-tower (pro sustentacione campanille) of the church of St. Peter, Dorchester, 4 pence, and due rents, etc., to the King. Also to the same Alice, for her life, my two burgages in West Street, paying the dues to the King. If Alice dies in the lifetime of Robert, my son, I bequeath to him and his heirs the reversion of all the aforesaid tenements, paying 4 pence yearly for maintenance of the bell-tower aforesaid. The original indentures are still extant among the town records, with seals of red wax attached, one counterpart bearing the letter " I " surmounted by a crown, and on either side a palm branch, and endorsed, " Dorchestre Irror in Domes day ib'm folio lijmo." The other counterpart has a seal bearing the letters " G M," with a heart from which a merchant's mark (?) is issuing, between them, and is similarly endorsed. B I (a) and (b).

Also, to her and her heirs three butchers' shops, one of which was late Skryueyn's (268) , one late William Gay's, and one late John Drau's ; also two acres of arable land lying in West Wall of Dorchester, also my tenement in the same town which William Huntewake holds, I bequeath to John Rumbyl and his heirs. To the Court, Dorchester, Monday next before the Con version of St. Paul, 3 Henry V. [1416], before John Bomel and Robert Bertram, Bailiffs, came Thomas Crymelford, son and heir of John Crymelford, and claimed to have seisin of two tenements in Dorchester, one on the north side of West Street, between the tenement of Richard Beryll on the west, and the lane which leads to North Street (ducit ad vicum borialem) on the east; the other on the east side of North Street, between tenements of Reginald Jacop on the north, and of Peter Gouldesmyth on the south, which two tenements descended to him after the death of the said John, his father, and Joan, his mother, of which John he was next heir and of full age. Proclamation was made that if anyone should show cause why seisin should not be given him, he should appear at the next Court, in three weeks. No one appeared, and the said Thomas was admitted. In witness the Bailiffs affixed their seal of office to these presents.

At the Court, Dorchester, Monday next after the feast of St. Thomas, Martyr, 3 Henry V. [1415], it was ascertained that Matilda, late wife of John Joce, had died since the last Court, being then seised in fee of one burgage, situate on the south side of West Street, held of the King, and that she died without issue. Whereupon the Sub-Bailiffs (suhballivi) present that in virtue of their office, according to the custom of the town, they took at once the said burgage into the King's hands. At which day came John Nagard, clerk, and claimed to have the burgage, as cousin and heir of Matilda, viz., son of Richard, brother of John, father of the said Matilda, and craved seisin. Proclamation. No opponent appeared at the next Court. John came and proved his title. The Court conceded that the hands of the King should be removed, and the said John should have full seisin. " In the name of God, Amen. Tuesday next after the feast of the Epiphany, a.d. 1423, I Reginald Jacob, of Dorchester, make my will in this manner. First, I bequeath my soul to God and my body to holy burial ... of St. Peter of Dorchester aforesaid. Item, I bequeath to the fabric of the Cathedral Church of Sarum, I2d. Item, I bequeath to the fabric of the church of St. Peter aforesaid, I2d. Item, I bequeath to the fabric of the church of Charmynstre one sheep (bidentem). Item, I bequeath to the church or chapel of Waltereston, a sheep. Item, I bequeath to Robert, my brother, one silver cup. Item, I bequeath to John, my brother, one silver cup. Item, I bequeath to John Fauntleroy, of co. Dorset, my second best silver cup with cover and one polium [? pelvem] with laver (lavacro). Item, I bequeath to Joan, my wife, my whole tenement in Dorchester aforesaid, with dovehouse annexed, situate together at the West Gate of the same town, to have and to hold to the said Joan for the term of her life, so that after the death of the same Joan the whole of the said tenement, with dovehouse and their appurtenances, may remain to John, my bastard son, his heirs and assigns for ever. Item, I bequeath to the said Joan, my wife, all other my tenements with their appurtenances in Dorchester aforesaid, to have and to hold to the said Joan for the term of her life. Item, I bequeath to each godson of mine one sheep {ovem). Item, I bequeath to the fabric of the chapel of the Blessed Katharine of Markesewe, in com. Cornwall, one missal. The residue moreover of my goods and chattels not bequeathed I bequeath to the said Joan, my wife, to dispose and ordain of them, as shall best and most freely please her.
