Winfrith Newburgh

Winfrith Newburgh is a large parish about 8 miles south west of Wareham. The parish church is dedicated to St Christopher and was fully restored and enlarged in 1854. At this time the north aisle was added, however some Norman architectural features still remain, the most notable being the north doorway. The registers date from 1585. 	East Knighton, East and West Burton, Portway and East Fossil are all hamlets within the parish. At East Burton there is a chapel that is served by the clergy of the parish church. In 1895 there was a post office, and a National School. At East Burton a school was attached to the chapel. Carriers were available going to Weymouth and Dorchester most days. The parish comprises 4496 acres and the chief crops used to be barley, wheat and oats with a large area of pasture. The population in 1891 was 869. Until 1923 East Burton was a chapelry of Winfrith Newburgh and thereafter a chapelry of Wool, only separate Baptism records exist from 1840 to 1890 (see below). The small Church is located in the hamlet of Giddy Green and is nowadays used by the Purbeck Vineyard Church.
