Fordington Manor Court Roll Dated 3rd March 1566/7 Baron and Barne families Links to Manor Court Rolls: 1599 1600 1626 1644/45 ![]() NOTE:- The above extract from the Court Roll for Fordington Manor dated 3rd March 1566/7 needs to be professionally transcribed so that we have a proper understanding of its context. It clearly relates however to the BARON Family who we know had arrived at Dorchester by 1419, became burgesses of Dorchester and that Walter BARON and his wife Margaret, members of that family, owned a burgage with curtilage at East Street Dorchester from 1431. Also that Walter died soon after writing his will on 18th March 1440 in which he refers to himself as Walter BARON of Fordington, asks to be buried in St Georges church in the parish, and leaves his burgage with its curtilage in East Street to his son John BARON. We also know from the Surveys of Fordington Manor that the tenement and plot in East Street was held in the year 1600 by copyhold grant held by William BARNES Senior (1545-1621/2) the 2nd son of John BARNES (1513-1567) husbandman by his wife Christian. The following survey in 1607 is particularly helpful in confirming William's plot was previously held by "Christian his mother relict of John Barnes his father." The extract above seems to refer in 1566/7 to a William BARON Senior and possibly to him being admitted to the copyhold of this 'whole place' plot ? My Latin is virtually non existent but the document interestingly also seems to refer further down to 'xpiana [Christiana/Christian] BARON mate[r]? [mother]? of William BARNES the just tenant and occupier? Further down still there is reference to 'W---BARNE Sen, John BARNE, and William BARNE Junior frate [brothers]' who are all the sons of John and Christian BARNES -- and William BARON Senior was admitted from the --- Robert BARON [Fine £4] |
